Healthy Lifestyle & Cancer Prevention

Why This Matters

Healthy lifestyle choices can lower the risk of developing certain types of cancer. While they do not guarantee prevention, they play an important role in long-term health and early disease prevention.

However, for individuals with a family history of cancer, lifestyle changes alone may not fully address inherited risk. In these cases, genetic testing and medical guidance may be important for understanding personal risk and making informed screening decisions.

Here are some healthy habits that may support cancer prevention and overall well-being:

Nutrition

A balanced diet helps support overall health and may reduce cancer risk

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Choose whole grains over refined grains
  • Choose lean proteins like chicken, fish, and turkey
  • Limit processed meats (like bacon, sausage, and cold cuts)
  • Keep red meat in moderation
  • Limit sugary drinks or highly processed foods

Physical Activity

Regular movement supports a healthy body and immune system

  • Aim for daily physical activity
  • Find activities you enjoy (sports, walking, running)
  • Reduce long period of sitting

Sun Safety

Protecting your skin helps prevent skin cancer

  • Wear sunscreen outdoors
  • Wear protective clothing and hats
  • Avoid excessive UV exposure

Avoid Risk Behaviors

Certain behaviors increase cancer risk over time

  • Avoid vaping and smoking
  • Stay informed about long-term health risks

Key Message

Healthy habits don't eliminate cancer risk, but they can significantly support prevention and long- term well-being.

At Kids 4 Cancer Prevention, we encourage kids to share these habits with adults in their lives and communities, helping spread awareness about prevention in simple and accessible ways.
